A Letter to non-paying clients

The best things in life are NOT free…

Dear non-paying client

I have a number of clients that I absolutely love, but you are not one of them.

Your R5 000 bill with my small business may not seem like much, but what makes you assume that you are the only asshole client I am dealing with?
I have come to the realization that I have over R76 000 worth of outstanding invoices from all of you. This is for work that I have put my time, blood, sweat and tears into.

To add insult to injury, I probably gave you a discount?
Do you feel proud of yourself?

I do wish that the “good exposure” I get from the work I did for you paid the bills. That’ll be 4 x exposures for groceries and 8 x exposure for rent, right? If only…

If only I could walk into a clothing shop and take what I wanted. I would say to them, “send me an invoice”, and then they would never hear from me again. The money they had spent on the material, the time and skills it had taken to construct the garment… I know I couldn’t have done it myself, but why should I care?

In this similar scenario, what do you think would happen?
That’s right. I would be arrested for theft!
Do you want to hand yourself in?
You can tell the authorities how you stole my time. You can tell them how you knowingly took a product with no intention of payment.

Congratulations. You’re a thief.

Stealing from a small business is depriving good people of what they have earned. It’s a ballet class for a little girl. It’s keeping a roof over a family’s head. It’s putting food on the table. Hey, it might even be a small vacation, but who knows?
Why don’t you give them a call and ask?

As a small business, my heart and soul goes into what I do. I take pride in what I produce.
I hope you are happy with your product.

I do hope that you never have your hard work stolen from you. What would you do if it was?
Would you be angry?
I can’t wait to hear your answer…
Maybe you can reply to one of my 20 unanswered emails and let me know?

Warm regards
Small Business Owner
